The Center for Teacher Education at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) held the ” “Spirit of Schweitzer Education Service Program” on July 23rd at Wanluan Junior High School in Pingtung County. For 21 consecutive years, the NPUST student-teacher team has utilized the summer vacation period to visit schools in remote and non-urban areas, accompanying students in exploring the joy of learning. This year (2026), the program was held from July 6 to July 10, July 13 to July 17, and July 20 to July 24 at Pingtung County’s Kung Cheng Junior High School, Jiadong Junior High School, and Wanluan Junior High School, respectively. Student-teachers leveraged their educational expertise to plan diverse courses rich in local characteristics—inspiring creativity and fostering the learning potentials of junior high school students.
The ” Spirit of Schweitzer Education Service Program” aims to encourage student-teachers and enrolled students holding teaching certificates to practice Albert Schweitzer’s spirit of caring for the disadvantaged through professional service. The NPUST team brought together 10 student-teachers from different professional fields, including the Department of Plant Industry, the Department of Early Childhood Education, and the Department of Food Science. Together, they designed cross-disciplinary courses that combined Pingtung’s local characteristics with life experiences. The content emphasized hands-on practice and practical application in daily life, helping students cultivate hands-on skills, explore career interests, and build self-confidence.
Through organizing the Schweitzer camp every summer, NPUST demonstrates the craftsmanship and a professional spirit of vocational education while fulfilling its university social responsibility (USR). Through their work they are enabling junior high school students in remote areas to explore careers and gain learning motivation while creating wonderful summer memories through warm and engaging activities.
