Taiwan’s woodworking craftsmanship has once again captivated the global arena. Chi-Sheng Chen, a student from the Department of Wood Science and Design at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), represented Taiwan at the 2026 WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, held from September 22 to 27. Competing against elite contenders from 25 countries, Chen navigated grueling schedules and rigorous standards with a flawless execution, securing the silver medal and bringing international distinction to both Taiwan and NPUST.
Advisors Zhao-Jun Deng and Chien-Nan Chen attributed his success to rigorous, long-term training that tolerated no margin for error—ranging from precise joinery and structural assembly to meticulous time management. This unwavering commitment to quality forged Chen’s exceptional focus and adaptability under pressure.
As a premier institution bridging theory with hands-on mastery, the NPUST Department of Wood Science and Design equips students with comprehensive expertise from material science to digital manufacturing. Chen’s triumph reflects the department’s dedication to cultivating world-class talent, empowering Taiwan’s wood industry professionals to excel on the global stage.
Looking ahead, the department plans to further expand its cross-disciplinary integration of sustainable materials, design innovation, and advanced manufacturing techniques. By combining rigorous practical training with forward-looking global perspectives, NPUST remains committed to ensuring that future generations of Taiwanese artisans continue to lead and inspire on the international forefront.
