Partnering with the Pingtung County Government and YouBike Co., Ltd., National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) has officially launched its YouBike 2.0 public bicycle system, expanding safe, convenient, and low-carbon transportation options for students, faculty, and staff.
The university held a press conference for the launch on September 16 (2026), attended by NPUST President Chin-Lung Chang, Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi, YouBike Co., Ltd. General Manager Ho Yu-jen, and members of the university community. The initiative reflects a collaborative effort among the university, local government, and private sector to create a more sustainable campus transportation environment.
Covering nearly 300 hectares, NPUST academic and administrative buildings, student residences, training facilities, and recreational areas are spread across the a very large campus area. To meet the community’s frequent short-distance travel needs, the first phase of the project includes 18 YouBike 2.0 stations and 1,039 bicycle docks, connecting major activity areas across campus.
The system began trial operations on August 26, with 17 stations on campus and one outside the campus. From August 26 to September 13, the system recorded 7,391 trips, demonstrating strong early demand. The five most-used stations were the First Dining Hall, Men’s Dormitories, General Building, Second Dining Hall, and Main Gate.
“An expansive campus is one of NPUST’s defining features, but it also presents unique transportation challenges,” said NPUST President Chin-Lung Chang. “The introduction of YouBike 2.0 provides our community with an additional mobility option while complementing campus bus services and pedestrian routes. By reducing reliance on cars and motorcycles for short-distance travel, the system supports our commitment to campus safety and sustainability.”
The campus YouBike stations are integrated into Pingtung County’s broader YouBike 2.0 network, enabling coordinated operations and bicycle redistribution between the university and the countywide system. The project was developed through joint planning by NPUST, the Pingtung County Government, and YouBike Co., Ltd.
NPUST will continue to monitor station usage, bicycle availability, cycling routes, lighting, traffic signage, and user feedback. The information collected will support ongoing improvements to station locations, bicycle capacity, and services.
The university also plans to strengthen bicycle safety education, promote awareness of pedestrian and cycling rights-of-way, and improve campus traffic management. By integrating public bicycles with campus buses, pedestrian infrastructure, road facilities, and traffic safety initiatives, NPUST aims to build a safe, convenient, low-carbon, and resilient campus transportation network.
The YouBike 2.0 initiative is part of NPUST’s broader commitment to sustainable campus development and its vision of becoming a leading green university.
