Tseng Shu-Hui—whose works are featured in the NPUST Library and Exhibition Hall’s Art Center—is drawing renewed acclaim from the art world following her selection by multiple prestigious French art salons. Among her submissions, her oil painting Setting Sun was selected by the Salon des Artistes Français, and her work Dajia Wenchang Temple was selected by the Salon des Indépendants, propelling her onto the international art stage once again and showcasing the creative strength of Taiwanese artists.
Marking its 20th anniversary this year (2026), Art Capital in Paris grandly exhibited at the Grand Palais, bringing together four major art salons—the Salon des Artistes Français, Salon des Indépendants, Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture à l’Eau, and Salon Comparaisons. The event attracted over 2,000 outstanding artists from around the globe, making it an annual extravaganza in the international art world.
Between 1999 and 2026, Ms. Tseng Shu-Hui has been selected a total of 38 times by such salons as the Salon des Artistes Français, Salon d’Automne, and Salon des Indépendants, and has been lauded by the media as the “record holder for a non-orthodox fine arts major from Taiwan selected for major French art salons.” Her long-standing dedication to creation and profound artistic prowess have earned widespread acclaim in the international art community. The university also extends its sincere congratulations to Ms. Tseng for her more than 30 years of continuous cultivation of artistic creation and her repeated international accolades.
The NPUST Art Center currently houses several important representative works by Ms. Tseng Shu-Hui. Among them, Night Voyage was her first piece selected for the Salon des Artistes Français in 1999, depicting the natural landscape of the Yangtze River before the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Inspired by a total lunar eclipse on the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the painting captures a cruise ship navigating through the gorge. As the moonlight reappears, the mountains and river surface are veiled in a hazy moonlight. Dominated by blue and purple tones, the artwork utilizes over 20 layers of thin oil glazes to evoke a deep, profound nightscape. It delicately renders shifting light and shadow alongside the soon-to-vanish historical landscapes along the Three Gorges, immersing viewers and allowing them to experience the poetic atmosphere woven by nature and time.
Another collection piece, Daan River Canyon, is the work with which Ms. Tseng Shu-Hui was first selected for by the Salon d’Automne in 2011. The artwork depicts the unique topographical landscape formed in the Daan River Canyon in Chuolan Township, Miaoli County, following the devastating 921 earthquake in 1999. Visiting the site in person for the sketching work, the artist employed an S-curve composition to present the grand and magnificent momentum of the canyon. Through the layering of color blocks and strips alongside a strategic layout of light and shadow, the piece merges realistic and abstract artistic expressions, fully demonstrating the awe-inspiring vitality of nature and landscape transformation.
In addition to Night Voyage and Daan River Canyon, the university’s Art Center also houses her works Old Dali Street (2000), Millennium Dawn (2001), Dawn (2002), Tragedy on Ketagalan Boulevard (2005), Surviving the Catastrophe (2007), Dusk (2008), and Longqin Bay (2012). In total, 9 important creative works previously selected for the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d’Automne are preserved here, completely witnessing the artist’s creative trajectory and artistic achievements across different periods.
The NPUST Library and Exhibition Center Art Center stated that Ms. Tseng Shu-Hui’s representative works selected for major French art salons between 1999 and 2026 are scheduled to tour the university’s Art Center for an exhibition from February to April 2028. The exhibition will comprehensively present the artist’s major creative trajectory spanning nearly 30 years. Art enthusiasts from all walks of life are warmly welcomed to visit and jointly witness the extraordinary achievements of a Taiwanese artist on the international art stage.
