NPUST Ranks 6th in Taiwan at the 2026 CommonWealth University Citizen Awards

National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) has once again been recognized for excellence at CommonWealth University Citizen Awards, with the 2026 results recently announced by CommonWealth Magazine. By leveraging technical expertise and forging strong links between local communities and businesses, NPUST has significantly expanded the social participation and impact of its teaching and research. Driven by strategies of deep local engagement and cross-disciplinary integration, the university is fulfilling its social responsibility to serve the community and care for the local region— and for its efforts, it has secured the runner-up spot among National Public Vocational Universities for the second consecutive year while climbing to 6th place among all universities in Taiwan.

This year, the CommonWealth University Citizen Awards introduced an interview-based review mechanism for the first time, representing a shift in the competition’s format and values. The goal is for universities to actively respond to contemporary challenges, proactively initiate change, and provide direction for society in uncertain times. In this rigorous evaluation, NPUST achieved the highest score across all public and private general and vocational universities in the Social Participation category (4.20). This achievement serves as a testament to NPUST’s ability to transform professional education into a powerful force for social progress and community development. Furthermore, the university received a perfect score (5.00) in the University Sustainability Performance Peer Review—a testament to the high regard that Taiwan’s higher education sector has for NPUST when it comes to innovation in sustainable development and University Social Responsibility (USR).

During the award ceremony, NPUST President Chin-Lung Chang stated that NPUST has been ranked the number one “Green University” in Taiwan for 12 consecutive years (2014–2025). By integrating sustainable development and social responsibility into campus governance, the university has shown significant results in resource integration, innovative investment, cross-disciplinary cooperation, local revitalization, industrial partnership, and social contribution. NPUST has progressively become an indispensable driver for regional development and industrial upgrading in Pingtung County. President Chang noted that the award highlights how university social responsibility at the school has entered a phase of deeper integration. NPUST will continue to uphold the practical nature of vocational education, remaining committed to social welfare while responding to industrial needs and assisting in policy implementation. The university aims to attract more faculty, students, local citizens, and enterprises to join the ranks of sustainable development and social responsibility, moving from solving real-world problems to leading social development and promoting harmony.

The CommonWealth University Citizen Award is the earliest and only survey in Taiwan to provide a comprehensive review of university social responsibility across all ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) dimensions. Drawing from international definitions of USR and the spirit of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings—which align with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—the awards evaluate universities based on University Governance, Social Participation, Environmental Sustainability, University Sustainability Performance Peer Review, and University Impact Projects. It is widely regarded as a highly credible assessment of a university’s social responsibility and influence.
