NPUST Fashion Department Offers Free Haircuts, Bringing Professional Care and Companionship to Local Nursing Home

Students and faculty from the Department of Fashion Design and Management at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) recently visited the private long-term care institution in Pingtung County to hold their annual “Free Haircut and Care Activity.”

The students utilized the professional skills they acquired in school to give back to society. The activity was not only an opportunity to showcase the students’ learning results but also allowed them to experience the value of their profession and a sense of social responsibility in a real-world setting. The goal was to let the elderly feel warmth and companionship while getting a fresh, neat new look.

During the free haircut session, students worked in groups under the guidance of their instructors. Every step, from communication and style consultation before the haircut to the actual operation, was handled with meticulous care and patience. The instructors specifically reminded the students to adjust the cutting technique based on the elderly residents’ hair quality, face shape, and daily habits, emphasizing individual needs to ensure the best results.

The seniors revealed relaxed and cheerful smiles while being kindly attended to by the students, and the interactions filled the site with a warm human touch. Participating students expressed that through this event, they not only enhanced their technical skills but also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of personal interaction. While grooming the seniors, they felt genuine positive feedback and a sense of accomplishment through dialogue and shared smiles. The close interaction allowed them to listen to the seniors’ stories and share the joys of life—making it more than a technical exercise but a valuable experience about care, understanding, and empathy.

In the future, the Department of Fashion Design and Management will continue to promote related services and use professionalism to encourage goodwill. In this way, they hope that the concept of university social responsibility (USR) can become deeply rooted in the hearts of every NPUST faculty member and student, and that they will continuously bringing warmth to every corner of society.
