NPUST Department of Forestry Holds Sustainability and Exploration Workshop for Teachers and Students to Promote Low Carbon Economies

The NPUST Forestry Department cooperated with the Daren Forest Farm and local businesses to hold a workshop during the summer holidays, running from August 21st to 23rd. The three-day and two-night training camp was designed with vocational high school students and teachers in mind. More than 30 teachers and students from 9 vocational high schools, 10 regular high schools, and non-school-affiliated experimental education groups from around Taiwan participated in the event.

The team instructing the training course was led by Yu-Ting Wu, the director of the Department of Forestry, and included of Professor Mei-hui Chen, an expert in Satoyama under-forest economics and community forestry; Assistant Professor Chih-Kai Yang, an expert in forest ecology and ethnobotany; and Assistant Professor Chung-I Chen, a carbon sink expert. The team also collaborated with industry experts to conduct the teaching activities and specially invited Jin-Yi Liao, founder of the NPUST-mentored start-up, Forest Originated Co., Ltd. and Micro Carbon Stone Sustainability Consulting Co., Ltd. CEO, Pei-Hsuan Shi to share their insights. The rich teaching contents include: introduction to forestry careers, forestry curriculum planning and goals, understanding under-forest beekeeping, introduction to the Daren Forest Farm environment, development and utilization of emerging under-forest economic plants, net zero emissions and natural carbon sinks, and much more.
