Putting Albert Schweitzer’s education philosophy to practice, teachers and students from NPUST’s Center for Teacher Education held summer camps for local school children for the 20th year this summer. This year’s camps were held under the banner of “2024 Summer Creative Arts—It’s Really Fun!”. As per usual, college students led junior high school students through a series of fun and intellectually stimulating courses, and everyone was able to get a lot out of the experience.
Every summer, NPUST sends teams of volunteers to junior high schools in remote rural areas of Pingtung County to hold summer activities for school children. This year the camps were held at Chongwen Junior High School and Wanluan Junior High School for the first time, running from 7/1 (Monday) to 7/19 (Friday). A camp was also organized at Jiadong Junior High School for its 7th year. A total of 76 students from the three junior high schools participated in the activities. The professional cross curricular courses offered at the camps were developed by 9 teachers and students from the Department of Fashion Design and Management, Department of Plant Medicine, Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management, Department of Animal Science, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Department of Early Childhood Education. The courses were specially designed to provide the junior high school students with an opportunity to explore their interests and develop practical inquiry skills.
By investing resources into local communities, and encouraging its teachers and students to share knowledge and experience with junior high school students, it is actively practicing University Social Responsibility (USR). Through these activities, NPUST is able to foster enthusiasm for volunteer services among her students, while also cultivating professional knowledge among junior high school students and enriching their summer break.
