National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) began its story in 1924 with the establishment of what was then named the Kaohsiung State Pingtung Extension School of Agriculture. Over time, as it expanded, the school went through several name changes, restructurings, and upgrades before it would ultimately begin operating under the banner of “NPUST” in 1997. With the arrival of 2024, one hundred years on, NPUST now stands strong within the ranks of Taiwan’s centenary universities.
Through those 100 years that brought the Kaohsiung State Pingtung Extension School of Agriculture up to the present day, it was cultivated into a comprehensive university comprised of seven colleges while it simultaneously worked to cultivate the talent of countless individuals in many different fields. First established with a focus on tropical agriculture, the school created inroads for the development of Taiwan’s early agriculture, forestry, fishery, animal husbandry and other industries. It also helped Taiwan in its mission to provide technical support to friendly nations around the world, and today, many children of countries that share diplomatic ties with Taiwan are still coming to studying at our school. As times progressed, the development of school affairs followed suit—industrial transformations were echoed in teaching policies, and research and development found focus in various types of machinery, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things. Providing a guiding trajectory to it all, the school chose to adopt ‘technological agriculture’, ‘ecological industries’, ‘platinum society’, and ‘sustainable economies” as its four main axis of development. These decisions, and the foresight and diligent leadership of successive school presidents, has allowed NPUST to become an important international and domestic base for technical and vocational education, research and development, and policy advocacy. NPUST’s century gone by is filled with inspiring stories and pioneering journeys built on a hope that in the future it will be able to realize its goals and uphold its priorities as it continues to cooperate with leaders from every sector to cultivate the rich talent of all her students.
