For the 2024 National Intercollege Athletic Games which were held from May 3rd to 8th, NPUST sent out 12 sports teams and 109 athletes to compete in track and field, swimming, badminton, table tennis, tennis, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, karate, woodball, cycling and gymnastics. The hard work and strenuous practice of the athlete were well rewarded as they managed to exceed expectations and set a new school record with 10 golds, 2 silvers, and 4 bronzes. The athletes also placed between fourth and eighth in 24 other events. For total number of medals, NPUST ranked 10th among the 166 participating colleges and universities, and when excluding colleges and universities that specialize in sports, it ranked 3rd overall.
Before the opening ceremony began, the NPUST had already won 1 gold and 1 silver in Taekwondo, with Wen-Yuan Chang and Yi-Chi Wang taking first in Poomsae general mixed duos, and Chang also taking second in the general women’s group event on the same day. Jung-Wei Hsiao secured the third medal for the Taekwondo team, winning a bronze in the general men’s 54kg category. The Taekwondo team also had six 5th place and one 7th place finishings. On the Judo Team, the freshmen performed very well with Yi-Chen Cheng winning gold in the men’s sixth-level judo competition and Bing-liang Lin winning bronze in the fourth-level judo for the general men’s group.
In the wrestling contests, Bai-You Kuo, who recently transferred over from Judo, won a gold in general men’s level 4 freestyle. Yu-sheng Peng also managed to retain the top spot in the general men’s level 3 freestyle for a third consecutive year, and Chia-Ho Chang won a silver in the general women’s level 2 freestyle group following two years of near misses.
The track and field team won 2 golds, 1 bronze, and 1 fifth place ranking. Bai-chang Huang won the pole vault for the second consecutive year in the general men’s group. In the general women’s group, Pin-juan Chang made a valiant break away in the final 150 meters of the woman’s 1500-meter competition to win the championship. Taking one more medal for the team, Chen Yu-An lept himself into third place in general men’s triple jump.
The table tennis representatives took home 4 gold medals and 1 fifth place ranking for their school following an intense 5-day series of matches. The general men’s team reclaimed the championship from last year after the first three days of battle, then in the general men’s doubles, De-Yue Lu and Yi-Hsian Chen secured the second gold for the team, followed by a 3rd gold in general men’s singles by Chia-Hung Ho. The final gold was achieved by a freshman, Heng-yu Lin, and sophomore, Kai-yi Huang, in the general mixed doubles group.
Finally, the karate team was able to secure 1 more bronze and 1 fifth place for the school with freshman Bai-yu Chen finishing third in his debut competition in the fifth level open group. Though coming shy of medaling, NPUST also saw excellent performances in woodball, badminton, cycling, swimming and gymnastics. Congratulates NPUST for an outstanding competition!
