Kaohsiung City’s largest science promotion event of the year was held with extravagance on November 26, 2023 at Heping Elementary School in the Gangshan District of Kaohsiung. Thirty-six universities from across the country participated in the event, with a total of 100 booths set up to present scientific breakthroughs, national defense developments, creative cuisine, and more. It was estimated that the event would bring in up to 4,000 visitors throughout the day.
For National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), which is regularly represented at the fair by Professor Hudson Hsu and Professor Chang-Hsien Tai, the practice of University Social Responsibility (USR) plays a central part in its mission to develop local partnerships and cultivate talent. The annual science promotion activity originally started out as a cultural and creative market for community schools and small farmers, but later expanded into the realm of popular science. Diversified learning, literacy, and the spirit of inquiry, which are emphasized by Taiwan’s “2019 Syllabus” also became a central theme. By the third holding of the science promotion fair, 23 universities came to participate. Now in its sixth year, that number has grown to 36. NPUST, which has been participating in the event for three years now, is dedicated to developing professional talent in many fields of learning. Artificial Intelligence and Mechatronics Professor Hudson Hsu, who has a remarkable pedigree, has also committed himself to using his position as a professor and prolific inventor to help disadvantaged students achieve success. Together with aerospace engineering professor and former NPUST president, Chang-Hsien Tai, NPUST is working to develop more local talent and encourage students from rural areas to get interested in the world of science.
