NPUST Inaugurates Dr. Chin-Lung Chang as New President

With Dr. Chang-Hsien Tai’s second term as president of NPUST coming to completion, on August 1st, 2022, a ceremony was held at the Ministry of Education to present Dr. Chin-Lung Chang with his official letter of appointment to the position. Education Minister Pan Wen-chung presided over the ceremony, during which the outgoing president transferred the university seal to the incoming one, who has been called into office to continue carrying the mission of the university forward.

On the following day (8/2), an inauguration ceremony was held for Dr. Chin-Lung Chang at the NPUST International Conference Hall. Accompanied by his wife, Chang was welcomed into his new position by over 250 distinguished guests who were present to witness the event. Those in attendance included former presidents of NPUST, Chang-Hsien Tai and Shan-Da Liu, along with many top level representatives of universities, businesses, hospitals, and associations from Kaohsiung, Pingtung and other areas of the country. There were also a number of distinguished guests from abroad, including both the president of the Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment, Prof. Aisak Pue, and its director, Mr. Martin Maden.

In his speech, the newly inaugurated president said: “I would like to express a special thanks to my predecessor, Dr. Chang-Hsien Tai, for his excellent leadership, as well as to all the teams of teachers and students at the school for their hard work. Together you have cultivated immeasurable talent in the field of education and made NPUST into the excellent university that it is—both in terms of performance and reputation”.

With the support of so many behind him, Chang is taking on the responsibilities of chief administrator at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and will continue to work diligently to live up to the expectations of all of the various sectors associated with the school. Quoting former German Chancellor Angela Merkel who once said “always be more than you appear and never appear to be more than you are”, Chang shared how he was influenced by the rigorous and detail-oriented attitudes of the German people while engaged in studies at Stuttgart. For Chang, the governing of school affairs will be done with focus on detail; and step-by-step, he will work to strengthen the constitution of operations and management, improve the quality of university affairs, and build a sustainable campus for the school.

Change believes that in our rapid-changing world, those with cross-disciplinary capabilities and humanistic literacy are going to be at an advantage. And so, under his tenure, NPUST will aim towards becoming a “university of the future” and will cultivate talent that can meet the needs of an ever-changing world. And for Chang, these goals come part-and-parcel with the “university social responsibility” agenda that was promoted over the past eight years by President Tai. Chang maintains that the university should be a stronghold of local knowledge promotion and a powerful driver of industrial innovation. To live up to this role, the university will continue to promote cross-domain learning, enhance the industry-university cooperation, and promote the connection between the school and local causes.

At the ceremony, former president Chang-Hsien Tai made some remarks, in which he stated: “standing on the stage today, I feel very relaxed. I have served as the president for 8 years and now I am handing it over in the blink of an eye. I am very happy that NPUST has elected this young, energetic and very enterprising man to be president and I believe that President Chang will lead NPUST to a better future and take the university much farther than before”.

With the support of his peers and an expectation for the continuous advancement of the school, Chang will apply the experiences he has accumulated over the years—whether it be from his doctoral studies at the University of Stuttgart, or his years teaching at the Department of Vehicle Engineering and serving as administrator—Chang will use what he has acquired to help NPUST meet the challenges of tomorrow and constantly achieve greater levels of performance.
