The NPUST Department of Wood Science and Design held its annual exhibition this May (2022) to present the graduation projects of its students to the world once again. The theme for this year’s project was “surname design: people oriented designs for the name”. The scope of the project included “circular economies using agriculture and forestry waste materials”, “furniture design”, “product design” and “spatial design”. The exhibit was set up at the NPUST Library and International Conference Hall with a total of 33 works on display for public viewing from April 25 to April 29th.
At the opening ceremony, NPUST president Chang-Hsien Tai made some remarks, stating: “I would like to begin by thanking the class director for providing such enthusiastic guidance for this excellent joint exhibition. I would also like to congratulate the students for reaching this milestone and completing their course of study. As students of the Department of Wood Design, we go beyond carpentry by cultivating the ability to design. The trend of today’s society is the acquisition of cross-disciplinary talent, and by coordinating these things with sustainable development, we look forward to creating a better future.”
Department of Wood Design Professor Sheau-Horng Lin also shared a few words saying: “thank you to our university president and to the other officials for providing our students with very rich and diverse resources and encouragement in their studies, and giving them opportunity to take part in all types of competitions to win honor for the school and demonstrate outstanding skill. We hope to see the aesthetics of wood integrated into life and that the students will be able to develop many different styles.”
Professor Jun-Jie Huang, who provided technical instruction to the class, said: “the expertise learned at school is not only technical ability— in the future, the aim is to integrate what you learn with the development of various industries. I wish you all the best, and that you will have success in all your endeavors.”
The “surname design” creative process for this year’s class called the designers to use their surnames as starting points for their creative design. They were also called to reflect on themselves to determine the “warmth” of the creation. In this way, each of the works has a special meaning which is personal to the creator.
For the viewers, the charming works offered a warm and harmonious perception of wood design and was an expression of its contribution to the human living environment. The creations also exhibited the sentiments of “breathing within art, living within creative concepts, and establishing healthy and high-quality living environments”.
For those unable to make it to the NPUST campus for the initial exhibit, the works will be moved to the Kaohsiung Pier-2 Art Zone for a second showing from May 12~15 and then up to the Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 in Taipei from June 1~4.
